Bonsai tree: Fourth Entry Bonsai Art Contest

Bristlecone teapot, by Mike Viljak. Here’s what Mike has to say about it: “Attached is a photo of a bristlecone-inspired teapot I made out of porcelain. The outside is glazed in raw wood ash, but fired in a gas kiln. The base is made of local clay I collected. When doing both ceramic art and bonsai, the two tend to inform each other in lots of ways.”
But don’t wait too long. Entries are coming in at a brisk pace, so we’ll probably close the contest pretty soon. Here are the details on how to enter. Most people are writing short statements about their entries. You might want to do it too.

Bonsai tree: Second Entry inBonsai Art Contest

Here’s Ken To’s entry. And here is what Ken has to say about it: “Here is my entry for the art contest. This is a wire bonsai sculpture made entirely from 24 gauge wire. It is planted in a high quality Japanese mame bonsai pot. I made this as a surprise present for my wife on Valentine’s day. Just in time for the contest! “
Back in mid-February we started yet another contest. This one has generous prizes; generous enough to maybe motivate you to enter.
Because the first one is Frank Kelly’s drawing that we used to kick off the contest.
We’ve already received several more entries that we will feature over the next few days. We’ll wrap it up when we get our quota; so don’t wait!

Bonsai tree: Identify This Tree

Be the first to tell us what kind of tree this is, and who the artist is.

Contest result

Ferry Freriks’ stout-trunked little Honeysuckle takes the grand prize in a down to the wire contest for a $100 gift certificate.
Altogether 41 people submitted their choices. The total count for the first three finishers were: Ferry’s Honeysuckle 84. John Romano’s Erodium 80. Brian and Jill’s Serissa 80.
When I started this contest it didn’t occur that it would be so close. Next time I will divide the prize among the first three finishers. Meanwhile, John and Brian and Jill will have to share content with the knowledge that lots of people enjoyed their trees.

Every single tree got at least a handful of points. And I enjoyed them all and appreciated your daring in submitting your trees and subjecting them to our critiques.




Brian & Jill’s Serissa and John Romano’s tiny Erodium tied for second, just four points behind the first place bonsai.

Unique bonsai contest

The 11 bonsai below have been entered in our Unique Bonsai Contest. The winner will be determined when 25 judges will send in their decisions, or by March 31st. Anyone can judge, but only one time per person.
However, you can’t assign 5 point to your own tree. You must assign 5 points to a tree that is not yours. You can assign your own tree 3, 1, or zero points.
Please ask a maximum of only one family or friend to judge if you have entered a tree. A stufed ballot box could mess the whole contest up. This will have to be on the honor system, but that should not be a problem as all of our contestants are, honorable people.
